I’ve been meaning to do this for a while now, but… well, holidays are less helpful when it comes to hack progress than they seem. And TL’s hair and hat was infuriating to export.
But regardless, here it is: A revamp of Vaati with a brand new model created from scratch, and this time also Wifi safe.
The main changes to the previous version are about the cape and his hat. The former is now made from Toon Link’s actual body, and the latter was made less wide. Aside from that, his hat is now moved as much into the front as I was able to, and the main part of the gem-thingy on his hat is now made from Toon Link’s eyebrows. And last but not least, I removed his right eye and put a scar in its place, to make sure that he doesn’t look “derpy” when both of his eyes are visible. But I guess I talk too much already… I’ll just let you judge this by yourself with some pictures which compare this new Vaati with the previous version.

Too bad I already made the pun about getting Zelda stoned.
Oh well.
It’s looking like Vaati to me, can’t find anything to give feedback on.
Wow. This is good. The streching has been unstreached and it looks better thatn ever. Has anyone made a PSA for this?
me gusta
Love it, completely.
Vaati is my favourite villian of all time.
I have but one complaint – Have him wield the four sword.
That’s it =P
Was anyone else reminded of the Spongebob sweater made out of eyelashes at the eyebrow part? No? Didn’t think so >_>
Wonderful hack regardless!
Such a small change, but it makes it so much better. Great job Calamatis!
Looks too similar to v1 for what a “v2″ should be. Is this model mostly Toon Link, or mostly Vaati? We’re in days where we can rearrange vertices basically anywhere. Yeah, you have to keep to the original build, but you can do so much more than what you have up! Fix up the pants a little. Give the man a proper tunic, fix up the dated ASH texture.
Still, I had v1 on my SD card for months. It’s good work… This just isn’t a proper improvement I would expect it to be, you know? I commend your work.
Oi…just…oi…I can’t tell you what it is, but you’re doing SOMETHING wrong with this guy…I’m pretty sure it’s a combination of the hair, eyes, and mouth, along with a few other various details. But I’m a perfectionist so that’s how I go.
Sadly I don’t think this will be receiving a download from me.
STOP MAKEING SO MANY VAATI HACKS!!!
@Above user
Oh shut up
This seems good enough to be final. Besides, he’s only made a couple of revamps.
You know, Black Boo… You should be giving more constructive feedback, not just being harsh, first off, he based the eyes on the manga Vaati, have you seen his eyes?
I feel Cal got those eyes pretty close to be honest, second, Cal wanted to make this Wifi safe, so editing bones was out of the question. Why not go into further detail, instead of just insulting? WHAT is it about everything?
As for my own feedback, his hair I GUESS could be better, but then again, how would the long hair be made in the first place? As I recall, Toon Link’s head in the back doesn’t have many vertex points… Second, once again I say, this was intended to be Wifi safe. Third, it’s a pain to export…
His texture I guess could be a bit more detailed in some places, but again. Vertex stretching is a nuisance… Although the cape clip could be rounded out, rather then that bit of it going up, making it not perfectly round.
Finally, the shorts would be odd looking if made the way they really are in the game artwork… Though I guess Cal could widen the whole tunic, and make it baggier…
Anyway, that’s my critique. Now Cal, don’t take it the wrong way, this is still a good hack in my opinion, and Wifi safe, something most hackers don’t seem to focus on… And I hate that, I play Wifi a lot… So this is a nice addition to my roster.
All and all, it has flaws, but shouldn’t be overlooked.
@Black Boo:
Well, excuuuuse me princess! How about you try to actually give some proper feedback instead of just saying “Oh hey there’s something wrong with this but I don’t know what lol”? I mean, what are you, pissed because I didn’t let collab with me on this?
Honestly, I did as much about this as I could, so give some proper feedback or just say nothing at all. >_>
@Cal and D_D: I would, but I just can’t seem to find anything I particularly LIKE about this hack. so excuuuuuuuse me for not being able to give something I don’t have. It’s not a bad hack, but it’s not good either. It’s in the middle really. I get that you based the eyes/face off the manga Vaati, that’s obvious. But in combination with the hair and lack of eyebrows, it just doesn’t look right. Maybe you should try to at least texture some eyebrows on his face so he doesn’t look like what someone said as the sweater made of eyelashes spongebob. His hat/the top of his head is also considerably large (seen in the thrid to the last screenshot). His hair tossles also need to be longer, and you need to join the bangs on the left side (his right). I get that Toon Link’s hiar is a b*tch to export, but quit whining, grow some nads and do it. Deku Link’s hair was a nightmare to export, so don’t complain. his bangs also stick out from his face way too much, they should curve back in a little more, and overall be a little longer so they’re almost to his chin, if not a little bit past it. Now about the actual textures. They’re okay, nothing flashy or stunning about them, perhaps you should change that? Add some patterns around his sleeve openings, around his hemline, do what you can. And please, fix the cape texture on his front. It looks like it just stops at a lateral line, which looks horrendously unnatural. Lastly, I’d say thin his shins and puff up the red parts of his pants a little In the MC art, the pants almost look like spheres, or pretty darn close. Overall a lot widers than yours.
Those are my thoughts. Hope I’ve crystalized them for you. Also, it had nothing to do with the fact that you didn’t want me to collab with you. I would say more, but I’m pretty sure I’d sound like a dick, so I’ll just leave my comments to that.
I have a feeling Black Boo’s above comment will get thumbed down, but the fact of the matter is, everything he said is perfectly valid and makes sense and is completely constructive. I to be honest would have said something similar, but BB worded it much better than I would have and with more detail. And you know how much of a fan I am of your hacks Cal, but I too felt that there could have been more here.
Of course it’s going to get thumbed down SDoom. It’s because I’m saying “bad” things about an “AWESOME HACK LOLZ.”
I’ve been here long enough and I’ve talked with enough people to know the general process of the average blog-goer’s mind. Allow me to demonstrate.
“O MAN THIS HAK IZ SO AWSUM BECUZ ITZ MAI FAVERATE KARACTAR!!11!! MUZT G3T TEH HAK!!111! IZ SO PURFEKT BECUZ ITZ A KARACTAR TAHT EVURY1 LUVS AN IZ FRUM A ANIME OR GAEM IVE DEADIKATED MAI LIEF 2!1!1!!!11!” *reads critique* “O NO U DINT!!1!!1 THIS HAK IS AWSUM AN PURFEKT UR A BIG MEANIEFAIC THUMSDOWNNNNNN!!!11!!1!1111! HEI GAIZ LETZ ALL THUM HIM DOWN 4 GEEVIN FEADBAK!!!!1!1!1!!!!1″
…Okay that’s dramatized but that’s pretty much how I see it. I also see how it was so hard for Calamitas to write that Shadow Kong blog post. Typing that poorly is painful.
Well, valid criticism or not, there’s something that you still need to consider:
For once, the limitations that a character that only ever existed in 2D games and only has one piece of official artwork has. With these few informations regarding his appearance, it’s only natural that I have to make use of the artistic license for some things. For an example, I for my part can’t really tell from his official artwork whether Vaati is supposed to have eyebrows or not – to me it looks more like he doesn’t have them.
And for the other thing… I know that vertex hacks and bone edits can do a whole lot of things, but there are still limitations… and sometimes, the edits that can be made may be accurate, but end up looking stupid.
Looks good enough to me, time to update the other Vaati I have to this one.
@BlackBoo: Yeah your feedback would be spot on, and I also made an edit of his hair and sent it to Calamatis.. though I’m probably gonna do some more touch ups when I’m next bored.
Aside from that, the way you gave the feedback couldve been better.
I’m not criticising you or anything, as it was partly fueled by Calamis’ response.
@Calamatis: Read the above.
