Alright folks, we’re muddling through the difficult part of this project, so we figured we’d release a beta, and let everyone take it for a spin. More info after the jump.
What is this?:
- Currently, a full model and animations replacement of the Ice Climbers with Mario & Luigi.
What’s been done?:
- Lensho was tinkering with ice climber character replacement, and it got us thinking about this. I (Jack) was pretty excited about the idea, so I went ahead and spent the rest of the week replacing all 315 animations that appear within the ice-climbers’ animation data. Dingoberriz is working on porting the moveset over.
What will the final product be?:
- We’ll have the moveset injected, as well as a new voicebox for each of them. So, our goal is to have a very Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga or Bowser’s Inside Story-esque feeling to them. Be nice to .fade, and maybe he’ll develop co-op moves for an even more M&L:SsS-esque experience.
What’s not working here?:
- Well, you can fight. No apparent freeze-up glitches are present. This was our main goal, and now that it’s 99% out of the way, we can focus on the other glitches that occur.
What? Glitches?:
- Yes. There two apparent ones that make it a little awkward at the moment. The first being a ‘run-in-place’ glitch that a lot of model swaps suffer with at first. The second one is a massive Rocket-shot UpB. They both use their jump, but the Popo-Nana “rope-throw” is still there, and blasts the main player into sub-Ozone orbit. Otherwise, this is a very playable.
Can they be fixed?:
- That’s the goal. Injecting their moveset is quite the bugger, since Nana… yeah – let’s not talk about it. Too much frustration. We’ll get it though. heh.
This is crazy! Can we expect a Donkey/Diddy duo or anything similar later?
- Sure, why not.
Where’s mah images and HD video?
- Yeah yeah, here you go. heh
And when we first started the project… we had nightmares. This was a challenging 3DS Max feat >_>;




Excellent job fixing Luigi’s face, this definitely looks promising.
Oh, also: I don’t know where their hats went in the process. The ice-climbers don’t have hats, so I guess it just disappeared.
Those working on the Doctor Mario “hole-in-head” hatless Mario gig, consider looking through our hex, and finding how they managed to become hatless AND load their hair. >_> Pretty cool bonus glitch. heh

Nce job on this Jack H, dingoberriz, and Lensho. i’ll give ideas for moves just incase you want any, I looked at walkthroughs of all 3 M&L games. since I can’t get those games.
Why not just have the Mario brother’s move set the same as the IC except for the specials? They’ve both got their hammers.
The specials however would need imagination however…
It’d be really bizzare however having IC vs. MB with them both as textures

Luigi as the front man is actually because of the texture slot. It swaps the two depending on the texture slot. It’s not as noticeable with Nana and Popo so people may have to decide who they want as the main.

Once the Ice Climbers can be made to work with the original moves then adding things will follow after. Nana hasn’t ever been edited in PSA for good reasons so any suggestions should wait until this is stable.
Fixing the run glitch is easy (in my eyes at least).
Porting the movesets over (especially replacing Nana) isn’t and I wish everyone good luck (really hope you succeed and then we can have a Dr. Mario and Kid Goku VS. Mario Bros.).
Heh, I had this idea months ago. I guess I should work on things I planned making instead of leaving them in the dust, tough I lost my list of ideas because of what happened to my driver.
Anyway, nice job, but this sure is creepy as hell. o_o

I also like the effects, since they’re not changed. It looks like the “hammers” are swords, and they throw ice balls. :3
May I request replacing any model with their hats, then using PSA to call them on all animations? You could also use the hammer item for some moves.

Before anyone asks for it.
Sonic and Shadow (and their super or hyper forms) WOULD be possible if they didn’t use textures with the same name. This also applies to making Plusle and Minun since they should have been in Brawl to begin with. The characters have to be 2 different models so they read 2 different textures. Plus matching different bodies isn’t that easy.

I forgot to tell this, but you could ask Dantarion on how to edit Nana’s PSA, since he is (or was) working on OpenSA2, which could edit Nana.
Also: Malleo and Weegee have joined the Brawl. o_O

Only because two Pikachus would share the same texture. Pikachu from Pokepark Wii with Pikachu is possible with some hellish vertex editing though. At least for people who want Sonic and Shadow Haxor was kind enough to make the GHZ-crew and the assist trophy Shadow over the Alloys. So they make be able to replace Nana with one of them.

This wouldn’t be happening if there wasn’t a way now would it. XP Once I make solid progress I’ll make a brief tutorial for messing with Nana. Since it’s almost no different then changing any other character.

Will this be possible for Kirby and Lucas? I did some Plusle and Minun textures for both of them several months ago, but I’m not that great with model edits and animation edits.

I didn’t know you edited your post. The hats being gone and them always having hair just kind of happened for some reason like Jack said. I wasn’t part of this until the PSA portion so I wouldn’t know. The Ice Climbers have very little to work with in terms of extra models and the initial betas are going to be almost identical to Mario and Luigi’s default movesets. Although later versions will be made to feel more like a single unit than two movesets at once.

Yes it should be possible with Lucas and Kirby but will be difficult with the big difference in bodies.
@Oizen: Yes, the eyes being fixed will be part of the final product. We can make them less creepy, but can’t give them their animations back, due to the ice climbers having every polygon load on startup. We had to remove all the other eyes and face models to look decent. [note: see bottom-most image. O_o]
